This measure is used to assess the percent of eligible patients screened annually for alcohol misuse with the 3-item Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT-C).

The Audit-C Tool:

The AUDIT-C is the required screening tool for alcohol misuse at the Veterans Administration (VA). The AUDIT-C is a 3-question validated alcohol screen that can identify patients with alcohol misuse who would benefit from counseling to decrease their drinking, or who have active alcohol use disorders (including alcohol abuse or dependence) and need referral. The AUDIT-C is scored on a scale of 0-12 (scores of 0 reflect no alcohol use). Generally, the higher the AUDIT-C score, the more likely it is that the patient's drinking is affecting his/her health and safety. AUDIT-C scores greater than 4 points in men and greater than 3 points in women balance sensitivity and specificity for identifying alcohol misuse. AUDIT-C scores of 5 or more are appropriate in the setting of a performance measure where brief alcohol counseling is required for all patients who screen positive for alcohol misuse.

In addition, fluoxetine continues to have formal FDA approval for treating depression in the pediatric population.

All treatments can be associated with side effects. "Approximately 3% to 8% of youth, particularly children, also may show increased impulsivity, agitation, irritability, silliness, and 'behavioral activation.'" A careful weighing of the risks and benefits, with appropriate follow-up to help reduce risks, is the best that can be currently recommended.
